About Capitol Square
Capitol Square is a unique combination of business, retailing, hospitality, restaurant, recreation and special functions facilities. The project was developed by the principal investor, First Scope Development Pty Limited as a major component of the Capitol Theatre Heritage precinct.
The project restored a heavily degraded group of historic buildings on the site of the Colony’s original markets. The early town’s Hay Market was situated on the site, a name which is retained to-day for the larger Chinatown precinct of the city.
The restoration removed some of the low grade structures added in the early 1900’s and as part of the City of Sydney’s plan to consolidate the Capitol Theatre site, also closed and incorporated Parker Street.
The development team chose a blend of careful restoration of the facades to George, Hay and Campbell Streets with a very innovative glass galleria over what was Parker Street. The creation of this fully enclosed, air-conditioned “outdoor” space has also preserved views of the wonderful decorated brickwork of the Capitol Theatre’s western facade. This area now houses the restaurants, cafés and the spectacular mezzanine.
The lower ground floor features an 18 room Karaoke lounge with direct access from George Street open 7 days, 12 noon - 4 am. For further information, browse the web site.
